EP
(2006)
EP is The BUBG’s newest endeavor. Unlike the first
two BUBG CD’s, EP features only the orginial three
members of The BUBG: Kari Liston (vocals), Jeremy Segel-Moss
(guitar) and Adam Andrews (harmonica). EP is a smaller
album than any of the other releases. It started as a
way to capture our normal, gig-to-gig, sound on CD. So,
we piked some of our favorite blues tunes and performed
them just like we would on any given night on the road.
EP is a
little cheaper than the other albums and we ment it
that way. With only 7 songs, all covers, and in a slim
jewel case…EP was made for the person who wants
just a taste of The BUBG. If you’re just getting
into The BUBG, this might be a good first CD. Or if
you already have the other two, EP would offer the sound
you might here around town on any given evening!

2nd
SET (2004)
2nd Set was released in April 2004 and is not simply a
collection of the Gang’s music, but a project they
gorged themselves on for almost nine months. The approach
was simple, to capture the sound that comes from The BUBG’s
grueling live schedule, where each performance has a different
cast of musicians at a new location. The affect was an
album filled with all ranges of The BUBG sound - expected
and not so expected.
2ND SET features 7 originals, including All I Want and
Can’t Help But Love You, 2 Live tracks recorded
at Pop’s Blue Moon, 2 completely acoustic tracks
recorded with a single mic hanging in an empty room, and
12 special guests; Adam Andrews, Keith Doder, John Erblich
& Eric McSpadden on Harmonica, Brian Curran, Sharon
Foehner, Tom Maloney & Bennie Smith on Guitar, Matt
Murdick on piano, Mike Graham & Gus Thornton on Bass,
and Brian Casserly on Trumpet and Trombone.
2ND SET was also recorded at three different locations.
Benton Park Studio is a well-known studio
in South St. Louis run by local engineer Doug Rayburn.
Pop’s Blue Moon is a family owned
bar/music venue in St. Louis that features local and national
acts of all varieties. The Moon was one of the first bars
in St. Louis to hire The BUBG and has become almost like
a second home. The Dogtown Gallery is
actually an independently owned St. Louis Framery with
an empty upstairs. The upstairs, with wood floors and
no furniture, was the perfect spot for the BUBG to get
the acoustic sounds on songs like Can’t Help But
Love You and Sail On.
Besides the sounds of 2nd Set, The BUBG was lucky enough
to have worked with St. Louis artist Cbabi (pronounced
Kuh-bob-bi) Bayoc. St. Louisians have seen Bayoc’s
work around town at art festivals, gallery showings, and
in our case a venue we used to frequent. Bayoc created
two pieces of art for 2nd Set. First, the cover, which
features a panoramic view of Kari and Jeremy with a medley
of instruments. He also did a group caricature of all
of the musicians on the album. Artist
Statement (from www.bayocstudio.com). “The majority
of my work is acrylic on canvas. The body of work I wish
to exhibit is based on everyday observation. I draw, literally,
all day and try never to leave the house without paper
and a drawing instrument because I never know what is
going to inspire me on my travels around town. I used
to carry a camera for this same purpose but found it hard
to find my creative voice in those photos. But for me,
documenting with quick gestures gives a new-found energy
to my subjects that keep me going for days. Whether it’s
actual human interaction or the rust patterns on an old
dumpster or truck, I find references to human form in
almost everything around me. And once I get in front of
the canvas, I try my best to let that image develop itself
as I paint, much like sculptors would try to find their
way through an old stump.” –Cbabi BayocThe
result is a complete album full of St. Louis art. 2nd
Set features St. Louis musicians, a St. Louis visual artist,
St. Louis engineer and is full of St. Louis style. 2nd
Set offers the evolution of The BUBG, their music and
their community!

SOUTH
BROADWAY BLUES (2002)
South Broadway Blues was The BUBG’s first recording.
It was released only a year after the band started playing.
SBB is a peek into the first few years of The BUBG, when
they played every night, got paid in booze and had a great
time just picking up their instruments (actually nothing
much as changed). In
true BUBG style, there are several special guests on
this album: Matt Murdick (piano), Brian Curran (guitar),
Sharon Foehner (bass), Irene Allen (vocals) and Eric
McSpadden (harmonica). Check out the last song on the
CD, Who Do You Love, featuring all of these musicians
on one tune!

- REVIEW -
St. Louis' Bottoms Up Blues Gang balance standards like
"Mystery Train, "Ain't Nobody's Business,"
and "Just A Little Bit" with their own songs
- a jaunty "Meet Me Out Back," the wobbly
but true-to-life "First Time Blues." Adam
Andrews' busy harmonica and Jeremy Segel-Moss' lightly
amplified guitar provide the foundation for the vocals
of Kari Liston, whose pinched delivery gives her a vintage
sound that suits the Gang's approach on South Broadway
Blues. --Blues Revue
